Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

NICU AND MEDICALLY COMPLEX FAMILIES

What is a NICU doula and what kind of support do they provide?

A NICU doula is a certified doula with specialized training to support families with babies who have spent time in the NICU, may have medical conditions that require a feeding tube or oxygen, or are parents of preemies or children with other congenital health issues. Unlike a general postpartum doula, a NICU doula understands the medical environment, the emotional weight of a NICU stay, and crucially the complex transition home after discharge.

At Robyn at the Phoenix Poppins, NICU doula support includes:

• Finishing setting up the nursery while you are at the hospital, meal prep, and NICU turn-down service.

• Preparing for NICU discharge and what to expect at home

• Hands-on care for NICU graduates with ongoing medical needs

• Feeding support for babies with complex latch or oral aversion issues

• Overnight or daytime care for babies on oxygen or feeding tubes

•  Emotional support for parents processing a traumatic or unexpected NICU journey

Robyn is one of fewer than 100 Certified NICU Doulas in the country, with direct volunteer experience at Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s Cardiovascular ICU, in addition to the one-on-one support she has provided for families.

Does a NICU doula support me at home or while I am still in the hospital?

Both. NICU doula support can begin during your baby’s hospital stay — helping you understand your baby’s medical situation, navigate conversations with the care team, process the emotional weight of the NICU, and prepare for the transition home. My goal is to help you bridge the gap between the hospital and home so you feel confident as you bring your baby home.

Once your baby is home, the work continues. Virtual support can also begin well before discharge day for families who want to connect early. I can also provide in-home support overnight or during the day while you sleep or work. I know how hard it can be to find reliable, gentle, responsive care for babies that might need extra support or have specialized medical needs. I generally spend about three months with each family, but I can stay longer or shorter depending on your needs.

My baby is coming home from the NICU soon. How can a NICU doula help with the transition?

The NICU-to-home transition is one of the most emotionally and logistically complex moments a family can face. After weeks or months of round-the-clock medical support, going home can feel terrifying rather than celebratory.

Phoenix Poppins specializes in exactly this transition — helping families understand their baby’s specific care needs, feel confident with any equipment or medical routines, and decompress from the emotional experience of a NICU stay. Support can begin before discharge and continue through the first weeks or months at home. Don’t wait until discharge day to reach out.

Do you have experience with Failure to Thrive?

Yes. Failure to Thrive (FTT) is a diagnosis for infants who aren't gaining weight at the expected rate, and it often involves complex feeding challenges, frequent weight checks, and care routines that can feel stressful and all-consuming for families.

Phoenix Poppins has experience supporting families navigating FTT, including assistance with high-calorie feeding strategies, tube feeding support, tracking intake and output, and helping parents feel empowered rather than overwhelmed. This is an area where the combination of NICU doula training and hands-on experience with medically complex infants makes a meaningful difference.

As examples, here are a few of the types of babies I have worked with who had FTT as a result of:

- Reflux

- IUGR

- Oral Aversions

- Premature birth

- Congenital Heart Defects (CHD)

- Celiac

- Cleft Palate

I also have access to a network of other NICU doulas I can get support from if your baby runs into issues I haven't seen before. I ,also have experience with paced feeding and using specialized feeding tools like the Dr. Brown's blue disks, which are commonly used for issues with cleft palates and some preemies.

Do you support families with medically complex babies or special needs?

Yes — and this is one of the things that sets Robyn at The Phoenix Poppins apart. With specialized NICU doula certification, direct experience in the Phoenix Children’s Hospital CVICU as a volunteer, and over 20 years of experience with children and families, medically complex newborn care is a specific area of expertise here.

This includes babies with cardiac diagnoses, preemies, multiples, babies with feeding challenges, oral aversion, reflux, Failure to Thrive, or other conditions requiring attentive, educated care. Every family’s situation is different — the free 45-minute consultation is the right place to talk through your baby’s specific needs.

Can you support my baby on a feeding tube?

Yes, I have supported families on both NG and G-Tubes. I have worked with families who were weaning their little one off feeding tubes to being completely bottle-fed. I have also worked with families that were transitioning from NG tubes to G-Tubes. Providing care overnight post-surgery and helped them to find solutions to common issues that can come up with feeding tube care.

I am not able to provide site care, including dressing changes.

Can you support my baby on oxygen and/or sternal precautions?

Yes! One of my very first clients as a NICU doula was supporting a baby recovering from heart surgery. That little one was on oxygen and sternal precautions. So I am familiar with both! I volunteered as a baby cuddler at Phoenix Children's Hospital in the CVICU for about two years. So I have supported many heart babies that were on oxygen there as well.

Do you have experience with Food Allergies

Yes! My son has celiac disease, so I know the impacts of cross-contamination and the importance of detailed label reading. I have also worked in households of many families that had anaphylactic allergies. Then, of course, I have worked with many babies that have had CMPA (milk protein allergy). Before we start, we will make a family plan to keep the person with the allergy safe- this is not limited to the baby, but anyone in the house.

Have your worked with twins or preemies?

Yes, I have worked with both. I have even worked with twin preemies on feeding tubes. Twins and preemies both can have specific care needs. I am happy to discuss your specific needs and how I can best support your family.

Is Phoenix Poppins a smoke-free provider?

Yes. Phoenix Poppins is a completely smoke-free professional service. Robyn does not smoke and comes from a smoke-free home environment. This is especially important for families with preemies, NICU graduates, or infants with respiratory sensitivities, and you should always confirm this with any in-home care provider.

Would you be willing to wear a mask?

For medically sensitive babies and families, I can wear a mask. That is not a problem. My job is to lower your stress. If I need to wear a mask to keep your baby safe, I am happy to do so.

What is your vaccine status?

I get an annual flu shot, and I have all the same vaccines they require at the hospital for volunteering. So I have all of the standard childhood vaccines or have completed a titer test.  I can provide proof of vaccination for FLU, COVID, and TDAP upon request.

SERVICES & HOW IT WORKS

What does a postpartum doula actually do?

A postpartum doula supports the whole family after the baby comes home. While most parents hire a postpartum doula (also known as a newborn care specialist or night nurse) because they want help with the baby. As a doula, I support the entire family. This means I go beyond hands-on newborn care, feeding support (breast, bottle, or both), and sleep education. That could include emotional support, help resetting the house, making meals, breastfeeding support, or answering your endless middle-of-the-night questions. My goal is to make the newborn season feel a little less like you’re figuring it out alone.

I can help primarily with the baby, support you as a mom, or even focus on a sibling to make sure they know they are still just as loved and cherished.

Are you able to provide virtual support if I don't live in Phoenix

Yes! I can provide virtual support while you are in the NICU, CVICU, or PICU if you live outside the Phoenix Metro area. I can also provide virtual support for those in Phoenix looking for light support.

How much do your services cost?

We will create a customized plan for your family's needs. We offer virtual support packages starting at $175. We also have in-person support packages that can include sibling support or transitioning home. I do set aside some scholarships for families in need. The consult is completely free with no obligation to purchase.

In general, in-person support ranges from $35-$50 per hour depending on the role/duties, number of children, and length/timing of my shift.  I can also offer hardship discounts on some services.

Can you provide in-person support?

Yes, I can provide both virtual and in-person support. If your little one is currently in a hospital in the Phoenix area, I can provide in-person support at the hospital or at your home. However, most of my clients utilize my services after they are discharged from the hospital.

Can you help with sibling support?

Especially during flu season, you might not be able to bring your other children to the hospital. I can also provide support with siblings (including overnight care).

Are payment plans available?

Yes, we can offer payment options. I want our services to be flexible and accessible.

Are your service packages fixed, or can they be customized?

Everything is customizable. The packages on the Phoenix Poppins website are a starting point, a way to give you a general sense of what support looks like and how it’s typically structured. They’re not a fixed menu.

You can mix and match services, adjust visit lengths, add or remove components, or build something completely from scratch. Day visits typically run 3–4 hours; overnight visits 8–12 hours. Custom options start at $250, and my hourly range is generally $35-50 per hour depending on the role, number of babies, length of contract, and type of shift.

Some families do a few virtual meetings; some families might do 6 months of daytime support; another family might do a few weeks of overnight support. Like Mary Poppins, my goal is to come in when you need me most. Then when the winds change, you let me know, and we can work on transitioning to whatever works best for your family.

Overnight support is the most popular request. On average, most families keep me for about three months. However, I don't lock medically complex families into long contracts. We can go week to week; I usually ask for 2-3 weeks' notice unless the baby ends up back at the hospital for any reason. Even if the baby does need to go back to the hospital, I can also provide support at the bedside as long as the hospital is allowing visitors.

How do I get started? Is there a consultation?

The first step is a free 45-minute consultation — no pressure, no commitment. It’s a chance to talk about your family’s situation, what kind of support would feel most helpful, and figure out together whether Phoenix Poppins is the right fit.

From there, a care plan is built around your specific needs. You can book your consultation directly through the website, and support is available both in-person (Phoenix metro) and virtually (anywhere in the country).

If a consultation is just too much for you, feel free to text me at 480.420.8511. We can text until you are in a mental and/or physical space for us to chat. I know you have a lot on your plate right now, I always want to support you in the way that works best for your family.

Can I see your current availability?

The best way to check availability is to schedule your free 45-minute consultation; we'll discuss scheduling and timing during that call.

Because I offer specialized NICU doula support and personalized care for medically complex infants, I intentionally limit client slots to ensure every family receives dedicated, attentive support. For NICU families especially: don’t wait until discharge. Connecting before your baby comes home allows for the most thorough preparation and the smoothest possible transition.

That being said, I know you might be very overwhelmed right now. It is hard to schedule a call when you never know when the doctor will be popping by the bedside. If you just want to see if I am available or even chat a little over text, you can text me at 480.420.8511. You can also use the contact us link to send an email or use the chat function on this website.

What payment methods do you accept?

I try to make payment as easy as possible. I accept:

- Cash

- Check

- Credit Cards

- Venmo

- ACH Transfer

I am also happy to work with you to see if you can get payment covered by insurance or programs like Carrot.

Note: Credit card and Venmo payments have some additional fees. I do charge a $50 returned check fee for bounced checks.

Does insurance cover postpartum doula services?

Most traditional health insurance plans do not cover postpartum doula services. Check with your plan administrator to see whether your company provides maternity benefits. Carrot is a popular provider that does cover postpartum care. Guidance on navigating your specific options is always part of the free consultation conversation.

What is your policy on cameras in the nursery? (Nanny Cams)

I have no problems with cameras. They protect you and they protect me. I just ask that you let me know where the cameras are. It is fine to have a camera in the room where baby sleeps. Here is the policy directly out of my contract:

“Nanny Cams”: Family reserves the right to use cameras in their home. These protect the family and the caregiver. The family will disclose the use of cameras and will not place cameras in private areas such as bathrooms.
